Text

Shortly before starting in Roche's Stores I met Sheila Dunne in the Metropole Ballroom on 13th May 1963. This was a pivotal moment in my life. She was, and still is, a slim dark haired, supremely confident girl, not long up from Kells in Co Meath. I asked her up to dance and so began a lifelong relationship which has endured for forty eight years. I asked to walk her home and on arrival at the house where she was staying I asked if I might have a goodnight kiss, with an imperious toss of her head she said 'Certainly not! What sort of a girl do you think I am'.? So I went home unkissed. Nothing daunted I asked for further dates and in due course was amply rewarded for my persistence, not only with kisses but with her hand in marriage.
