I remember the first word I learned to read. I was outside my house in Russell Avenue and there was a van there with the word “DUBLIN” written on it. I have no idea what age I was but I distinctly remember spelling it out D, U, B, L, I, N, and pronouncing the word Dublin. I also clearly remember the revelation this was to me that letters meant something. Since those very early days I have been a voracious reader and if nothing else comes to hand I will read the back of the cereal box.
