Christmas was my very favourite time of year. On Christmas Eve I had to go to bed very early. I was so excited I could hardly get to sleep. Then on Christmas morning I was wakened by my granny shouting “come and see what Santa has brought”. In those days, we got a simple stocking with a silver sixpence in the toe followed by an apple and orange and perhaps some comics or a book, which I loved most of all and one year I got a doll and pram. Although our gifts were simple, we were just as excited as modern day children are with their very expensive presents costing hundreds of pounds.
