Text

In the early days, as I was a working for my father, nothing was properly formalised. I think I started off with £3 and then I went up to £5. From an early age, I saved my money, first with an account in a Post Office Savings account and, later, I was one of the first members of Newry Credit Union. By 1968 I had £400 saved to buy my first car - a brand new Hillman Imp. I became involved with the music business and with Tony Coleman began to run teenage dances. In the beginning, the cost £10 and the admission charge was 2 shillings (10p!!). I then managed a local showband who appeared on ITV's 'Opportunity Knocks' - the 'X factor' of its day.
