Of course next to the post office was our sweet shop, also a very busy place close to the public elementary school, we often worked long hours with never a dull moment. If we, that is my wife Doreen and myself, hadn't enough to do, but my younger sister, Phyllis, wanted us to go into partnership with her and her boyfriend on a confectionary and newspaper shop in Alliance Avenue - a busy area in North Belfast. Noel had worked in a carpet business in Randalstown which was closing down and Phyllis worked in insurance. I didn't know him very well so I agreed to acquire the business and when they were able they could buy back the shop, at the price I had paid for it. Noel only worked from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm, so a large family nearby took in the newspapers and did deliveries. The business was reasonably successful and at Easter and Christmas I took any leftover stock from the shop to sell in Glengormley. Alas, after a few years, my sister and Noel parted company and I gave him a month to decide if he wanted to purchase the shop. He decided not, so I sold it, as I had plenty of work to keep me fully occupied with one business in Carrickfergus and two in Glengormley.
